IND offers a series of workshops for academic staff at the Faculty of SCIENCE and participants attending UP.
Universitetspædagogikum (UP)
Teaching and Learning in Higher Education Programme
Learning objectives
The Universitetspædagogikum (The Teaching and Learning in Higher Education Programme) will qualify the participants to make theory-informed decisions in relation to planning, carrying out, evaluating and further developing their teaching in a manner that best supports student-centred learning. It should be planned with an awareness of the teaching being part of a course and a study programme.
The participants should be able to reflect on their own teaching practice in relation to students' learning and adapt their teaching accordingly.
In more detail, participants will develop competencies to
- Focus on the students’ learning outcomes – both in class and in the students’ work outside the classroom.
- Design learning environments that are conducive to student learning involving input from students.
- Set out clear learning goals and organize the teaching and assessment activities accordingly.
- Provide feedback to students on their learning and study practices.
- Incorporate the overall goals, structure and profile of the study programme into their teaching.
- Continuously reflect on teaching in order to continuously develop teaching practices.
- Engage in peer supervision.
- Employ technologies that support student interaction and learning.
- Produce and maintain a teaching portfolio.
The course consists of two parts, a practical and a theoretical and count 175 hours in total.
Throughout the course, you will be working on and building a teaching portfolio. The course is designed to provide you with materials for this portfolio, and it will be a part of the basis for the evaluation of your teacher qualifications.
Courses start in January, May, August, and November.

The theoretical part
The theoretical part accounts for 110 hours and consists of a mandatory two-day retreat, six course days with assignments in between, and a final project. The course runs over a full year.
Retreat
The course starts with a mandatory two-day retreat to get you well started and setting you off with a group project themed on student learning. This project includes interviews with students.
Course days
Each of the six course days after the retreat, is organized around a pedagogical theme. You will work in groups during the course days, and then work individually with small assignments between the course days.
The main themes addressed are students’ diversity and how students learn, characteristics of various teaching formats and useful teaching methods, how to set up feedback and assessment, planning and carrying out student supervision – all with the integration of digital tools and approaches. We teach the course in an exemplary manner so that you get to see and experience the approaches yourself.
Final project
You finish the course with a project related to your own teaching practice. The projects are collected in a course publication to disseminate the work. However, it is voluntary to contribute to the publication.
The practical part
In the practical part, you will engage in supervision with a department supervisor and an educational supervisor discussing and reflecting on your teaching, and thereby upgrading your teaching qualifications.
The department supervisor is a colleague who has academic knowledge of the field in which you teach, and experience with teaching it. Furter, there should be an open and trustful relation between the participant and the supervisor. The educational supervisor has specific university teaching qualifications and is appointed by the department of Science Education (IND).
The department supervisor will participate in three teaching sessions, and the educational supervisor in two. Wherever possible, there should be convergence between the two. The supervisions should cover a variety of teaching activities relevant to your educational function, and all formats are welcomed.
The practical part consists of pre- and post-meetings related to a teaching observation, and is estimated to 65 hours of work. Furthermore, we also set up a frame for peer supervision. The practical part is finished with a meeting between you and your supervisors discussing your teaching portfolio. A final statement is then formulated.
How to pass
The course is passed based on active participation throughout the course including the timely handing in of assignments and projects including providing peer feedback. The retreat is mandatory.
The course is directed primarily at faculty VIP with teaching duties at SCIENCE and SUND. Other staff can participate – if you wish to do so, contact the course responsible; however, it is crucial that you have enough teaching tasks. If your contract runs out within 12 months of the beginning of the course, it is possible to participate only in module 1 and get a certificate for that.
Prerequisite
As a prerequisite for taking the UP course, participants are expected to have completed or take the one-week course Introduction to University Pedaggogy (IUP) or similar teacher training. Workload is 75 hours.
Special requirements
It is a requirement that you carry out teaching tasks which allow for supervision and feedback throughout your participation at the course. This means preferably different types of teaching adding up to at least 100 working hours.
