The school algebra challenge in Danish lower secondary school

Abstract:

The presentation will provide an overview of the progress of the PhD project “Transition from arithmetic to algebra through resources and modelling”. The construction of a dominant and epistemological reference models is central to the study of the transposition process and to developing a diagnostic test to measure students’ practical and theoretical knowledge of arithmetic and school algebra. Along with the description of the models, some key findings of the empirical study will be presented, in particular the atomization of school algebra and the interpretation of algebra as a modelling tool.  

I will also briefly touch upon my ongoing research on experimentations of the use of translated Japanese textbook material, with the effect being measured through the diagnostic test.
