The Indonesian government has carried out a curriculum reform, known as Kurikulum Merdeka, which has been implemented since 2021. This reform has a substantial impact on the structure of mathematics learning which emphasizes numeracy, mathematical content, and 21st century mathematical skills. One of the policies pursued by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Higher Education to accelerate mathematics learning in Indonesia, particularly in elementary and junior high schools, is adapting Japanese mathematics textbooks into Indonesian context. The didactic transposition that occurs in this process undoubtedly causes gaps that need to be filled in order to grasp the opportunities and challenges faced by various parties, particularly schools, teachers, and students. In this situation, the researcher involved in the process of adapting Japanese mathematics textbooks and teacher professional development program discovered various quandaries that need to be explored and studied in order to build an adequate framework for the implementation of adapted mathematics textbooks. Therefore, this study presents a preliminary finding of adapting Japanese mathematics textbooks into Indonesian new curriculum reform, which can be used as a lesson learned by policymakers and curriculum developers in dealing with mathematics textbooks from other nations.
