Trajectories of Diverse PhD Students in the Natural Sciences: Dilemmas and Potentials in Developing Research Competences and Supervisory Relations
This project explores the different experiences and expectations related to doctoral education and supervision within the natural sciences in Danish higher education today.
Given the increasing number of PhD students and researchers with diverse national backgrounds at Danish universities, the purpose of this research project is to generate knowledge about the ways in which varying research traditions and cultural norms influence the expectations and experiences of doctoral education and supervision in the natural sciences.
The project aims to map varying trajectories of PhD students and highlight dilemmas and potentials that emerge for PhD students and their supervisors, as well as creating insights into the broader conditions characterizing doctoral education and supervision in the natural sciences today.
The research project combines narrative interviews, semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and contemporary historical methods to shed light on the manifold conditions, expectations, and experiences that shape the PhD education and supervision across different environments. The project also includes a study of institutional, political, and historical contexts to qualify and further support the development of research competences and supervisory relationships within doctoral education and supervision.
