N2 - Although teaching and research together constitute the core activities in an academic department, they are often valued quite differently. This chapter will cover two key areas in leading and managing teaching in academic departments for which the asymmetry between teaching and research plays a central role: first, how to lead faculty in their career progression as teachers, and second, how to manage workload distributions when allocating teaching duties. Finally, the chapter will discuss the special role that heads of departments have as they mediate between institutional and faculty perspectives on the importance of teaching.
