Centennial Conference "Crossing the Disciplinary Boundaries of Physics"
Many people from IND have been involved in the organization of this celebration of the centenaries of the Niels Bohr Institute (founded in 1921) and Niels Bohr’s Nobel Prize in Physics (awarded to him in 1922).
On August 7–11, 2023, the Niels Bohr Archive, the Niels Bohr International Academy, and the Niels Bohr Institute have hosted the Centennial Conference "Crossing the Disciplinary Boundaries of Physics."
The conference was part of a series of events dedicated to celebrating the centenaries of the Niels Bohr Institute (founded in 1921) and Niels Bohr’s Nobel Prize in Physics (awarded to him in 1922). The conference culminated in a large public celebration on Wednesday afternoon, August 9, which was opened by HRH The Crown Prince Frederik and during which the main lecture was given by 2022 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Morten Meldal.
Many people from IND were centrally involved in the organization of the conference (Christian Joas and Richard Staley) and as invited speakers at the History of Science Meeting on August 7–8 (Hanne Andersen, Christian Joas, Anja Skaar Jacobsen, Richard Staley, Kris Harper).
Almost the entire HPS group attended the meeting. It focused on the borderlands between physics and other disciplines, both in history and in today’s cutting-edge research, with a special emphasis on the Life Sciences.It thus brought together the more systematic interests of some of us in the dynamics of modern science and inter- or transdisciplinarity with our interests in the history and philosophy of specific fields such as physics, biology, medicine, or the Earth sciences.
The conference was generously funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation and was held on their premises.
