Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the potential of a research and study courses in mathematics C in high school. The basis idea of a Research and study courses is to organise students approach to a field of knowledge through meaningful and challenging questions. The goal is to design a research and study courses on modelling with functions, and then test the design in a 1.g. class, where the students have a relatively weak motivation and preparation for mathematics. The theoretical framework of this thesis is the anthropological theory of didactics and in addition to this an epistemological reference model has been developed to enable a study of the planned and the implemented didactical process. Which is clarified in an a priori and an a posteriori analysis. Using this analysis, an attempt is made to make clear to which degree the students have managed to form the relevant mathematical praxeologies. It seems that only a few managed to do so to the degree anticipated.
